The Airship

“The Airship" (Norwegian title: Luftskipet) is a mobile art and communication arena, which will contribute to an increase in the economic, environmental and cultural value of Sotra- Øygarden. Curator and artist Gitte Sætre has developed the project and is responsible for daily operations. The Airship is part of the Pearls of the North Sea Trail, a cultural and economic project between the municipalities of Sund, Fjell and Øygarden, Museum West, Hordaland County Council, local artists and local industry. The Airship endeavors to explore the relationship between our cultural past, present and future.

The project has been developed on the basis of art's ability to visualize and debate the society in which we live. The Airship’s exhibitions take, as a starting point, the cultural and historic context in which the structure is positioned. The airships’s flexibility as an arts venue allows it to interact with its surroundings, reflecting and challenging the community, and the its connection with the broader society. The exhibition program has two directions, one focusing on the process of change in society, the other focusing on the region's heritage and memories. As a curator, I will continue to experiment with methods of communication aimed at different groups.

We want to generate debate and provide new focus and experiences within the community. The Airship’s exhibitions show works across all disciplines. The mobile arena presents art projects, mainly in visual art, but also in theater, literature and music.

The first exhibition “The Library” by Woojung Chun (Korea) debated the history of enlightenment - our urge to comprehend the world. This particular exhibition was shown next to the cultural heritage estate “Gjerdet kulturminnegard”, a farmhouse occupied by Nazis during World War II. The exhibition was chosen and adapted for this context. Its artworks revealed and reinforced the sites cultural and historic importance.

The mobile gallery is designed by architect Magne Wiggen from MMW- architects. The office was named one of the world's ten most exciting architectural office by international architecture magazine Wallpaper, in 2001. Its projects include "Fhiltex," "Time Machine" and "Kiss the Frog"(Norwegian title: Kyss Frosken). With its groundbreaking design the structure is a major attraction and landmark for the region.

The airship is owned by Gode Sirklar and is part of the National Development Program initiated by the Department of Environment and the Department of Cultural Heritage in Norway.

The next art exhibition will take place from April to June 2011. The exhibition will see a group of artists / activists going into direct dialogue with the municipality, regarding plans for the development of Øygarden.

The project is supported by: Norsk kulturråd, KORO og HFK.
